“I imagine waiting in line at a clothing store when a man jumps in line ahead of me. I feel disrespected. I draw a deep breath and quietly think to myself, ‘I’m okay with confrontation.’ Immediately I say aloud to the man, ‘I’m next in line, Sir. You are after me.’ The man apologizes and says he had not notice me in line and he then moves behind me.

“Now I picture a situation in which an acquaintance makes a rude and offensive comment. I draw a breath and release it, and repeat to myself, ‘I’m okay with confrontation.’ In a relaxed manner, I immediately tell that person that I am offended by the comment. The acquaintance is unapologetic and my objection angers them. This makes everyone around us feel awkward. But I’m okay with that. It is okay when others are angry or uncomfortable with me. I do not need everyone to like me or agree with me. And I feel great that I have stood up for myself.

“From now on I am perfectly comfortable when I feel the need to confront someone. As a grown and mature person, it feels wonderful to express disappointment or disapproval when I am upset by a person’s words or behavior.
