I might have worried that my anger would get out of control. I may have thought that expressing anger would make me a bad person or cause me to become angry all the time. I might have imagined all sorts of negative consequences to expressing my anger that made me
keep it to myself.
“But when I kept silent about angry feelings, the anger may have festered and
created inner disharmony of mind and body. I see now that keeping anger bottled up can have many negative consequences.
“I choose to change how I think and feel about expressing anger and how I behave whenever I feel angry. I choose to express my anger in healthy and controlled ways.
“I embrace anger as a healthy and normal human emotion. There are many appropriate reasons for feeling anger. When I express anger in healthy ways, it establishes my personal boundaries. It lets others know when they have infringed upon my psychological or physical boundaries. If I do not reveal when I feel angry, people may not realize when they have wronged me.
“I accept that the expression of angry feelings is an important part of healthy relationships with family, friends, acquaintances and strangers. In addition, I want healthy relationships.
“I dissolve fears about expressing anger. I give myself permission to express anger in non-violent ways, and to let that person or group respond however they choose. It is okay if others get upset or uncomfortable when I express anger.
“I remain in control as I communicate angry feelings and words to others. When I express anger it acts like a steam valve, helping me to safely release feelings so that they do not build up.
“Vocalizing anger is different than being hateful or doing violence. Even the kindest and most peaceful people express anger when necessary. Therefore, when I communicate angry feelings I remain non-violent. I continue to be a good and kind person. I no longer equate the healthy expression of anger with acts of violence or hatred. They are not the same because even good and kind people express anger. So I can feel comfortable expressing controlled anger even though I am a good person.
“I imagine that a close friend makes an offensive remark that makes me angry. I immediately express myself: ‘I feel really angry about your comment.’ I permit the emotion to come through my words. My friend looks surprised by my anger, apologizes for offending me, and clarifies the remark. We spend some time discussing the matter and my anger quickly dissipates. We remain close friends,
even after I expressed my anger and it feels good to be honest and open with my friend. Our friendship becomes better and stronger because I am willing to be honest when I feel upset.
