“Addiction to porn is like an abusive relationship. Some people stay in toxic relationships because they do not realize that a good relationship is possible for them.

“Others leave a bad relationship for a while but then return to it, because they do not accept deep down that they deserve a loving and supportive relationship.

“But I know that I can find and sustain healthy and exciting interests and relationships. I believe I deserve to be happy and proud of myself in all I do.

“I dedicate myself here and now to seek and find healthy ways to fulfill my authentic need for passion, intimacy and excitement. I invest my time and effort to  build interests in real relationships that give me what I truly want and need. There are no substitutes for those healthy and real interests and relationships.

“So I direct my subconscious to ignore pornographic material once and for all so that I never feel embarrassed or ashamed again. I dismiss all interest in pornography. I divorce myself from pornography, and it feels good to do that.

“I now imagine getting ready to watch some pornography. As pornographic images begin to flash on the screen, I imagine someone I deeply respect or love suddenly standing right beside me watching what I am about to do. And I think about how much their opinion of me matters.

(Take a moment to imagine it.)

“I see the surprise and disappointment on their face. As I do, any interest I had in watching porn completely disappears. As I immediately turn away from the pornography, I imagine the person I respect nodding and smiling with approval. They know I am capable of doing better things with my time.

“And I remember that there are other things that I could be doing which interests and excites me. There are passions I would like to explore. There are people I would like to contact and see in person. There is a better life I would like to live. Therefore, pornography no longer has a place in my life.

“Every time I consider returning to porn, I bring the face of that person I love and respect to my mind and I speak their name. When I say their name aloud, I am filled with a sense of deep pride in my growth and I am committed to my well-being. I instantly recall my commitment to fulfilling my passions in healthy and productive ways.

“Now I imagine that I walk along a sidewalk at night in a city. At the end of the block, I can see a luxurious hotel where I have a reservation. However, as I walk toward it there are sordid carnival barkers calling out to lure me into their places to watch pornography. They talk dirty and promise many pleasures if I follow them inside.

“I think of the face of the person I most respect or love, and I speak their name  aloud. When I do, the words and promises of the sleazy carnival barkers sound silly, self-serving and hollow. Any compulsion to watch porn disappears and is replaced with a fierce determination in me to go directly to the luxurious hotel to enjoy my stay in the city.

“As I bypass every offer to watch porn, I feel very proud of myself. Moreover, when I reach the luxurious hotel and go inside the lobby is filled with interesting people who introduce themselves to me. The concierge offers to arrange activities that match my true passions and interests. There are many exciting things to do and it feels good to have the time and energy to pursue them.

“With every passing day any interest in watching porn fades away until it is a distant memory. I can picture myself a year from now, and that it’s hard to remember why I ever had an interest in porn. I have so much more time on my hands to do the things that matter to me now that I am free of porn. I have much better things to do.

“It is good to be free from pornography now and forever.”
