When they widen, more blood flows through them, which gives skin a red, rosy appearance. So blushing is a response to heated emotions. I can learn to cool my emotions to reduce the blushing easily.
“As I gain mastery of my emotions in social situations, I can reduce or eliminate blushing altogether. I reduce the intensity of any emotion by taking charge of my breathing. Whenever I feel embarrassed, angry or feel any other uncomfortable emotion, I calm and regulate my breathing. As I silently think to myself ‘frosty blue,’ I will slow down my breathing and imagine that the air is a frosty blue color and a calmness and self-control will quickly return to my mind and my body.
“I now imagine myself in a restaurant with my friends and some strangers. Then someone says something embarrassing. This time, I choose to control my reactions. I think to myself ‘frosty blue.’ While others talk, I silently and secretly slow down my breathing. I quietly imagine as I breathe in and out that the air is a cool blue color. And after about three slow breaths, the feeling of embarrassment neutralizes and my face immediately retains its normal color.
“No one around me knows that I used self hypnosis to stop myself from blushing. And that gives me a surge of confidence and self-mastery so I can feel even more comfortable in social settings.
“As I grow more and more comfortable and confident with myself in social situations, I realize that my concerns about blushing get smaller and smaller . . . a thing of the distant past . . . until the issue just doesn’t matter to me . . . and I forget about blushing altogether.
