Breathing is your connection to life, and the natural world, and like all of nature, it has a rhythm. 

Take a few moments to do nothing more than simply follow the rhythm of your breath, and relax.

Imagine you’re walking along a mountain trail in summer, surrounded by pines, on your way to visit your favorite alpine lake. 

It’s morning, and the air is crisp, and as the sun rises through the trees you can see the sky grow brighter, and bluer. 

You got up early this morning to come and enjoy the fresh air, sunshine, and peace, and now you’re here. 

It feels good to walk along, hear to the ground crunching with your steps, and witness the birds and squirrels making their morning treetop rounds.

Soon the trail opens out onto a clearing, revealing a majestic lake, it’s glassy surface reflecting the sky above. 

Over to one side you can hear a stream that comes from higher up the mountainside, feeding the lake. 

And on the far shore you spot a small heard of deer, who have come to drink and nibble on the rich grass at the water’s edge. 

Take a few moments to enjoy this peaceful setting, as you listen to the stream, watch the deer, and follow your breathing.

Sitting on the shore to rest, you enjoy the profound stillness of this place. 

Time seems to both slip by, and stop all together, and you feel embraced by the serene presence of the mountains, the water, and the sky. 

Looking at the water’s surface, there’s no way of knowing how far down it goes.

But you might imagine that it’s a deep, deep bowl, home to fish and other aquatic life.

Every so often you notice rings on the water, popping up here and there, and you begin to watch the lake more intently. 

Now you see the water dimple quite close to you, and as the rings fan out you realize that fish are feeding, causing this hypnotic display. 

You watch the lake with still more interest, guessing where the next fish might rise. 

Take some time to settle in further, enjoy this simple, rhythmic display of nature, and follow your breath.

The peace and quiet of the lake carries you still deeper within, and the scene fades into you, now a part of you, as you focus softly of the gentle rhythm of your breath. 

Continue to let your breathing carry you inward, as you consider this question:

“What is most important to me?”

Sit with this question for some time, without trying to analyze or think, and allow any answers to come up from deep within. 

Take your time to simply let it be, as you ask, “What is most important to me,” and allow yourself to know whatever you need to know.

It will soon be time to bring this inner journey to a close. 

But first, take a moment to thank yourself for giving yourself this gift.

Bring your awareness gently back to your physical surroundings.

Take your time, and when you’re ready, open your eyes, and feel awake, alert, and refreshed.

While it’s still fresh in your mind, take time to write down anything you may have heard, felt, or learned in this exercise.
